PS3 Cell CPU Shrinking to 45nm

By Cornelius Wilson on 02/09/08 at 10:13 AM

The latest scoop on the PS3 front is that IBM plans to shift its Cell CPU manufacturing from the present 65nm process to the new 45nm process. As most of you know already, the Cell powers today's PS3 console. The concept behind the 45nm CPU shrinkage was more or less expected and it's obvious Sony means to get going with the whole PS3-price-reduction shebang. For one thing, the 45nm Cell will use approximately 40% less power than the 65nm variant, while its die area will be reduced by 34%. Apparently, the 45nm version will be cheaper to produce and more reliable, effectively reducing power budget, thus decreasing the amount of active cooling required by the console.

Once the 45nm CPUs hit the market, I'm pretty sure we'll start seeing cheaper PS3 packages.
