Ubisoft has confirmed that upcoming first-person shooter Far Cry 2 will be available on PS3 and 360, as well as previously mentioned PC.
Unlike the first title or its many console iterations, the game is no longer set on a tropical island, but instead this time it takes place in a small African country. You no longer play former lead Jack Carver, and you have the ultimate goal of killing a single enemy (for which reasons are rather scarce at the moment). It all sounds fairly similar to the famously bugged Boiling Point: Road to Hell, or more recently STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, but will almost certainly have a greater level of polish and far stronger marketing than those titles.
Crytek made the first Far Cry on PC (before jumping into bed with EA and making Crysis), and publisher Ubisoft created the various console ports on Xbox and Xbox 360. Ubi then bought the rights to the franchise and the engine, and released Far Cry Vengeance quickly after the launch of the Wii.
Far Cry 2 will no doubt be one of next year’s biggest shooters, but let’s hope it can fulfil the potential the first titles only really hinted at. It’s due for release in fiscal 2008 (post-April this year), although it probably won’t be ready for release until this autumn, I suspect. We’ll keep you posted with more news.
