It was one of the first PCI sound card solutions to offer MS-DOS legacy compatibility without special hardware extensions to the standard PCI slot. Its not. This is not a requirement exclusive to AudioPCI, however, as a number of ISA sound cards used it as well, including the Creative AWE ISA series. The driver is used all the way up to Audigy 2, I think.
In SQ4 I updated the Sound Blaster driver (patch for faster cpu) but after a while the speech will just loop. So it seems my device is something inbetween the two companies! Listening to the Doom recordings from the first post, I can hear the loss in quality compared to what I remember. AudioPCI had some surprises for the market. It didn't say which AudioPCI option to use when Windows discovers the hardware.

These newer cards are unable to use SoundFonts in DOS, limiting them to the three official .ecw wavesets from the late '90s and one incomplete unofficial waveset.
